The safest laser for dark, tanned and deeply pigmented skin (Fitzpatrick IV–VI).
The Nd:YAG fires the longest wavelength used in hair removal (1064 nm). Long light penetrates deeper and is absorbed far less by the melanin in the skin surface, so it can target the hair follicle without overheating dark or tanned skin — making it the gold standard, and often the only safe option, for Fitzpatrick IV–VI. The trade-off: it is also absorbed less by lighter, finer hair, so it can be slightly less efficient on pale/thin hair and is often felt as more intense (good clinics pair it with contact cooling).
